1/ Dire - say: Comment dire _________ en anglais?
= How do you say ________ in English? = What's the English word for ________? (quel est le mot en anglais pour dire _________) = Could you tell me how to translate/ say "récréation" in English? = How do you say "traduire" in English? Utiliser cette phrase "how do you say _______ in English?" pour demander à votre professeur-e la traduction (translation) d'un mot ou une phrase en relation avec la leçon. Use this sentence "what's the English word for _______ ?" to ask your teacher for a word or sentence that relates to the topic of the lesson. |
Say: dire
Speak: parler Talk: discuter/parler chat: bavarder récréation: recess translate: translate |
2/ Signifier - to mean: Que signifie le mot ________ en français?
= What is the meaning of the word _________ in French? Pour se rappeler du verbe "signifier" (vouloir dire) en anglais, pensez à la chanson de Justin Bieber "what do you mean?" Dans cette chanson, un jeune homme ne parvient pas décrypter ce que sa compagne essaye de lui faire comprendre. Elle lui envoie des messages contradictoires, alors il lui demande "que veux tu me dire" (what do you mean)? Il lui dit qu'elle a du mal à se décider (you are so undecisive). to nod = acquiescer (faire oui de la tête)
|

= I don't feel well. Can I go to the infirmary
Feel: se sentir/ressentir

Back is also a very important preposition.
Today I am going back to school.
It is back to school day for students.
It's time to go back to school.
When you go back to school you carry a back pack.
What is a back pack?
A famous Eminem song starts with "guess who's back"? -> Devine qui est de retour?
What is the meaning of "to guess"?
Yes, GUESS is a clothing brand but as a mature student you need to tell the difference between a brand and a noun/verb.
What is a brand?
A brand is a label, a tag that manufacturers place on objects sold. A brand helps you identify the goods (the products). A brand is comprised of common nouns or verbs (Guess East Pack) or made up names (Coca-Cola).
You would never use the brand Coca-Cola as a verb or a noun in a sentence about something else than beverages.
I cannot say "I am coca-coling" or "I saw a great coca-cola flying in the sky the other day".
But you could definitely use the words East, Guess or Pack to form sentences that have meaning (in another way than as brands).
